The Santa Monica Evening Outlook's Raoul Gripenwaldt predicted that Julien's portrayal of Johnny Wells in Paramount's Uptight (1968) could well result in an Academy Award nomination. In Uptight (1968), New York Times critic Judith Crist considered him a standout in a standout cast. Moving westward, he landed co-starring roles with Jack Nicholson in Psych-Out (1968) and Candice Bergen in Columbia's box-office hit, Getting Straight (1970). Along with his wife, he is survived by a daughter.Julien began his career in New York's Off-Broadway circuit including Joseph Papp's Shakespeare in the Park. He died there on January 1, 2022, at the age of 88. ![]() McGee appeared with him in the 1974 western action film Thomasine & Bushrod, which was intended as a counterpart to the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde. Julien was in a live-in relationship with actress Vonetta McGee from 1974 to 1977. He crossed through the Xi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi at Howard University on the December 4, 1954. Julien was born in Washington, DC on July 12, 1933.
